Cardinal Health finally sees savings from the tax cut – here's how it's spending it

Cardinal Health Inc. is speeding up its stock buybacks with cash from selling a stake in an acquisition and savings finally realized from federal corporate tax cuts.

At the same time, the Dublin healthcare giant is looking to cut $200 million in annual expenses by the end of fiscal 2020, which includes not filling jobs.

That doesn't mean Cardinal isn't investing in the economy,CEO Mike Kaufmann told me in an interview. And absent the savings, cost cutting would likely go deeper.

“We are putting significant dollars back in the company,” Kaufmann said. “Without the taxes, it would be hard to do those things.

“You have to compete effectively in the marketplace or someone comes in and does that for you,” he said.

Cardinal plans $360 million to $390 million in capital expenditures this year, on par with $384 million in fiscal 2018.

Earnings of $593 million in the first quarter were five times that of the same quarter last year, buoyed by a one-time $378 million after-tax gain from selling a majority stake of its NaviHealth division to a private equity firm. Revenue of $35.2 billion was up 8 percent from a year ago.
